SOTA is a relatively new aspect of radio that now has many hundreds of participants across the world.
The idea is simple – hundreds of hills and mountains across the world have been selected as SOTA ‘summits’. Participants must make at least one QSO (contact) from the summit to qualify it as an activation, however four contacts must be made to qualify for the points attributed to that summit.
Several of Otley Amateur Radio Society (OARS) members participate in SOTA and it is an excellent way of combining hill walking and radios.
More information and rules are available at the SOTA website.
